Top 5 storage tips & tricks
You might be tempted to take all those piles of boxes in your home and simply throw them into a storage unit, lock the door and walk away. While this might offer a quick solution, it also might not be the best and most strategic way of protecting your valuables. Here are five tips and tricks that will make your storage rental a better and smarter experience.
Make sure to plan
We know you want to get rid of all that extra stuff ASAP. But first, it would be smart to sit down and map out a master storage plan! Before loading up, make sure to make a list of what is going into each box. Label or number each box and make that correspond with your list. In addition, plan which types of boxes will work best with what you plan on packing away. Also, it would be good to watch a tutorial on how to pack your boxes the right way so that your items don´t break.
Choose the right unit
You could easily file this under “planning.” Our storage pros at Boundless can talk you through deciding on what’s best for size, price, and convenience. We can guide you on how to properly pack and store your items inside the storage unit. Our units come in a variety of sizes for your needs and best of all, they are climate-controlled. This is ideal when needing to store more sensitive items.
Know how to pack
Disassemble furniture if possible. Make sure that when you pack furniture, you wrap them in blankets so it doesn’t crack or scratch. This will give you more space to pack other items in the storage unit. Additionally, place boxes that you think you might want to access more closer to the front of the storage unit. Finally, if you are storing a mattress, then you want to make sure this doesn’t become a magnet for mold. We suggest spreading baking soda on your mattress and letting it completely dry before storing it.
Know how to stack
Last thing you want is to go back into your storage unit to see your fragile items buried under a stack of heavy boxes full of books. Make sure to always put heavier boxes at the bottom and don’t put too many boxes on top of each other vertically. While you´re doing this, create an aisle or walking space so that you can access your boxes when you need to.
Put heavy items in small boxes
Speaking of those big boxes full of heavy books … make the moving and stacking easier by putting heavy items into smaller boxes. First of all, you will prevent throwing your back out of place. It will also be easier to move these heavier items around in the future if you need to re-arrange things inside your storage unit.
